Harbor Life

I’ve never thought of grey herons and cormorants as friends, but here they are side by side, enjoying the warm October sun on one of the small islands in Uddevalla harbor. Uddevalla on October 20, 2019.

Birding in the Middle of London

From the archive: When I visited London in 2013, I had not read the fantastic blog on the birds in Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park (this is now one of my favorite bird blogs). Therefore, I was rather surprised by the number of birds in the middle of London. The grey herons chase fish everywhere, like here, in the Italian Gardens. On June 15, 2013.

Side by side, what I think is a common pochard and a great cormorant.

Great Cormorant [storskarv]

They do fly, the cormorants, though you often come upon them when they sit on rock, drying their wings. Dättern nature reserve, Grästorp, on July 20, 2015.

Great Cormorant [storskarv]

Cormorants are among the most disliked, and even hated birds, along the Swedish coast. Henån, Orust, on July 14, 2015.

Great Cormorant [storskarv]

Most people can’t see the difference between a great cormorant and the shag. The size and the shape of the neck is a giveaway (and I do hope I’ve identified this one correctly). Kosterhavet National Park, on June 10, 2015.
